Our efforts to be green

At CBS Interactive, we are committed to minimising the negative effect our activities may have on the environment and are taking positive action to counteract it.

As an interactive publisher, our carbon footprint is already lower than many other companies, but we want to do more. Since 2006, we have been working closely with Carbon Smart not only to off-set our carbon emissions, but also to identify the practical ways in which we can limit our impact on the environment.

We have set out a plan which takes some ambitious steps to cut our emissions. Through the plan we have committed to:

Reduce waste
  • Electronic communications are at the heart of what we do. We only communicate on paper if specifically requested by a client.
  • If we do have to print something, we use duplex printing and therefore reduce the amount of paper used by half.
Recycle
  • In 2008, we recycled 7,145kg of paper, 300 kg of glass, 320 kg of cans and plastic bottles.
  • All of our used PCs are given to a charity that re-furbishes them and provides them to establishments in third world countries.
Purchasing
  • All the paper we use is recycled - whether it be for our printers, photocopiers, business cards or letterheads.
Travel
  • Many of our team work from home on a regular basis.
  • If we do need to take a cab, we use a car hire company that has a fleet of hybrid cars.
Energy usage
  • All of our lighting uses low-energy bulbs and is sensor-controlled; it's only on if there is someone in that area of the office.
  • Our printers and photocopiers are all on time-switches which automatically turn them off at night and at the weekend.
